I want to be notified only if something really big is happening — how should I set the alert?

First, go to the Analysis and create a dashboard for the project you’re interested in. Choose the Customize option in the upper left corner, and find the Anomalies in time widget below the Results label. Add it to your analysis and check the anomaly threshold predicted by SentiOne.

A good practice is to compare the threshold for different periods, such as the last three, six, and twelve months.

Create a new alert by going to the Alerts module and clicking on the "create new Standard alert" button. Enter the anomaly threshold number in the Minimal number of mentions to trigger an alert field. This way a notification will be sent only once this number is crossed.
